How to Place and Remove a TransUnion Credit Freeze
Placing a credit freeze is one of the simplest, yet most effective things to do in order to protect yourself from credit fraud. Transunion is one of the three main credit bureaus and allows you to place one of the five different freezes.
Credit freezes are not the same as credit locks, or credit monitoring. Credit freezes offer the most protection and are completely free.
This article will show you how to place a freeze on your TransUnion credit report, what to do after it’s frozen, and how to lift it as needed.
Freezing your credit report
Before you start, make sure you have these available because their needed to complete login creation.
- Your cell phone or email ready to receive a verification code.
- Access to a previous credit report (if possible)
Creating a Freeze Account
For TransUnion, your freeze account is different from your member account.
- Visit https://www.transunion.com/credit-freeze
- Click “Add a freeze”
- Enter your information (make sure you enter everything correctly the first time, it may not let you try again without contacting support)
- Create a PIN and security question (store this information where you won’t forget it)
- Enter identity verification questions (answering these incorrectly may result in you needing to contact support)
- Once into the site, click “Add freeze”
- That’s it! Your TransUnion credit report is now frozen
Trouble logging in to your TransUnion account?
These accounts are very sensitive and sometimes appear to be suspended for an unknown reason.
If you get a message saying “your account is temporarily suspended”, you will have to contact support at 833-806-1627
Check your TransUnion credit report
Something you should get into the habit of is checking your credit report for potential fraud, especially if you’ve never looked at it before.
- To check your credit report, go to the freeze login, and click “unfreeze”
- Once logged in, click “credit report” in the header.
- Click “request your new report”, then “continue & view credit report.”
- After you gain access to your report, scroll through it and look for any abnormalities, such as: lines of credit you don’t recognize, incorrect addresses, or atypical overdrawn accounts.
TransUnion credit freeze removal
Now that your credit freeze is set up, how do you remove it?
Although credit freezes are supposed to be lifted instantly, if you are lifting your freeze in preparation for a credit application, try to lift it at least a day in advance to avoid any issues.
- Make sure to go back to https://www.transunion.com/credit-freeze/credit-freeze-faq, because you cannot log in with the typical member login.
- Click “Unfreeze”
- Log in using your account information, you may receive a verification code from your email.
- Click “Remove Freeze”, or “Temporarily lift freeze” if you want to lift your freeze for a short time span.
- Your freeze is now removed!

You can also lift your freeze over the phone if you’d like, but you will need to have your PIN in order to do so.

Note: TransUnion may be trying to phase out this method, but as of 3/14/23, it still works.
