Don’t let the Grinch Steal Your Identity This Holiday Season

The holiday season is also prime season for ID thieves.  This year take a few extra precautions to make sure the Grinch does not steal your identity.

  1. When shopping online use a credit card, not a debit card.  If your credit card is compromised you can dispute the charges.  If using a debit card the money is removed from your bank account.  You may get it back but it could take some time.
  2. Use caution when opening online greeting cards.  ID thieves love to send you emails with a link to a holiday greeting card.  The problem is that there is no greeting card, it is a link to install malware on your computer. When in doubt, pick up the phone and call the “sender” and verify they sent the email.
  3. In your wallet only carry the essential items.  If you do not plan on using all of the credit cards leave them at home, locked in a secure location.
  4. Lock your doors when you leave your home.   You also need to lock your wireless network.  You can do this by password protecting your network through your wireless router.  If you don’t know how to do this send me an email.
  5. Don’t fall for the fake donation calls, letters or door knocks.  If you want to make a donation then you initiate the call.  This way you can be sure your money is not going to a criminal.
  6. After the holidays do not put empty boxes to expensive “toys” curbside.  If you can break down the boxes and fit them into a recycling bin then do it.  If not, I recommend you dispose of the boxes at your local recycling station.  This way the criminals do know know that you have a brand new widescreen TV, tablet, or gaming machine.
  7. If for any reason the hair on the back of your neck stands up – pay attention.  If something does not look right or feel right, stop and think it through.  Often times we don’t and end up saying “I knew it was a bad idea.”
  8. Review all bank and credit card statements with a fine tooth comb.  If there are any discrepancies take action immediately.  Any delay could result in you losing the money permanently.
  9. Use caution when clicking on images in email, social network status updates and websites.  The criminals have now started using images to install malware on your computer.
  10. Always have up-to-date antivirus and anti spyware software as well as a secure firewall.  The firewall that came on your computer is not sufficient.  Spend the extra money and get ones that will work.  If you need recommendations send me an email
